DIGGIN'
LIVE MUSIC
I started seeing live bands at my high
school sodapop bar, where i pinted mural, hungup coats, swept up
& sold sodas.
We had several house bands, but the one that had a little bit of
fame was the Shadows of Knight, with their remake of a Van Morrison
song, "G-l-o-r-i-aaaaa."
Since I relocated
into Milwaukee, I've seen a lotta local bands and a gozillion national
bands, with the blame mostly going to Summerfest for that, but also
due to the Sunday night gigs I hosted at Gasthaus Zur Krone.
My music addiction goes from Zappa to
Polka with Bluegrass, Surf, Rockabilly & Punk and some Jazz &
Blues in between.
Here's a few of my favorites...
Western Box Turtles @ Puddlers Hall
The Western Box Turtles were one of Gasthaus Zur Krone's "house
bands."
Great swing band. Sadly, the "Box of Turds" broke up last year.
Fiddler Danny Smith carries on in Avalon 4.

Here's Western Box Turtles at Pere Marquette Park in 2005.

Salt Creek at The Gig in 2005
They played last Sunday at the Gig, after Locust Street Fest!

Here's the Alewives Reunion with the late great Davey Jones
at the Tasting Room in 2004

Here's Voot, Steve & Davey, doing Fresh Sounds at the Tasting
Room in 2004
 Tess
& Davey Jones' Hat at Davey Jones Memorial last year. Still
one of my favorite Surf Bands.
I caught the first Alewives show at the Stork Club, taking a break
from Locust Street Day.
Sadly, we lost Davey Jones last year. The memorial, with Tim &
Tess & Fly, were a nice treat. We miss yah, Davey.

Reunion @ Davey Jones Memorial @ Uptowner

Fresh Sounds with Steve & Voot at Davey Jones Memorial @ Linnemans.
The Fresh Sounds were another one of Davey Jones' bands.
Voot can still be heard at the Uptowner, performing as Voot Warnings
or.. bartending every now & then...

Brewhaus Polka Kings @ Delafield Brewhaus.
Dah boys started playing at age 15 as the touring backup band for
Frankie Yankocvich.
You can still catch them Fridays at 6 PM at Lakefront Brewery Palm
Garden & Tuesdays at the Old German Beer Hall...

Here's the Polka Kings at Lakefront with Art Kumbalek, whipping
it out on sax...

Dr. Chow's Love Medicine with Andy, Dan & Fly...
These guys are one of the cornerstones for my Zappa Fest
This is the current incarnation of Dr. Chow, with Andy doing his
Jaco Pastorius-style bass, Fly whipping it out on guitar, from the
Alewives & Dan on drums, from Shinola.

Dr. Chow's "Super Frank," alias Dr. Snowplow," Chandek
& Fly's frethand & peghead.
Stay tuned as I dig up a "Frank whips it out" shot, with
him on Captain Beefhart-style sax.

Mama Diggdown Brass Band at the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison
2004 ... they're now Locust Street Fest regulars !!!

Edgar Allan Cash @ Circle A. Caught Desmond, Laurie & crew,
filling in for Andy Apricot & The Brew City Rollers.
That's the elusive Andy Apricot on accordian.

Exotics @ Linneman's.
Milwaukee-based instrumental surf band, doing their "reunion"
tour.
Yup, that's Johnnie Z, from MSE Friday AM, on bass.

Mike Fredrickson, Dave Brown & Friends @ Linneman's.
Short of getting Royce Hall Jr. again, this is the closest we'll
get to a Mosely's reunion.
Freddie is a terrific song writer, currently bass player with Robbie
Fulks.

The Bel-Airs with Milwaukee local Steve Cohen on harp at the Up
& Under in 2005

Mosely's Reunion @ Linneman's, with the Royce monster
on Guitar,
Dave on drums & Freddie on Bass. Lotta originals, some Beatles
& a ton of NRBQ.
Yah, every Thursday at Linneman's for a lotta years, about a dozen
of us were digging the songs & cutting the rug to the Mosely's.

"We play Polkas on Guitarrrrrrr"
This was a double header with Polkacide.

for the Polkaholics - Polkacide Show

Z on vocals & rhythm guitar.
Jump blues, swing & rockabilly.

with Dave on sax.

Riverwest Accordian Club @ Foundation
My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think this was from the 2005
Riverwest Pub Crawl.
That's Mike on Tuba, Setzer, Don, Linda & crew.
Somebody told me they broke up. Sad, dad.
Why should you support live
music?
This quote is from Bailey Jones from the Sundilla
Acoustic Concert Series:
"Somewhere, there is probably someone who lived in England
in 1960s who turned down a chance to go to The Cavern Club because
he had never heard of the band. "The band" in question
was, of course, The Beatles. They went on to have a bit of success
in the music business; enough success that the guy who didn't want
to go see them play because he had never heard of them is still
kicking himself black-and-blue 40 years later. So when you're trying
to decide whether or not you want to drag yourself out to see some
unknown play... just remind yourself that every musician was once
an unknown, and that every musician who sells out arenas for hundreds
of dollars per ticket once played somewhere for under ten bucks.
And someone who paid hundreds of dollars to sit in the last row
of an arena once turned down the chance to sit on the first row
of a small venue for next to nothing.
Don't be this person!" Support live music!

Lafayette Indiana website.)
Are we missing YOUR band, your venue or your event ?
