We update DAILY !!!
You
like food ? So do I.
I like beer a little more and I love the two together.
Let me reminisce a little…
In Milwaukee, we used to have a bar called the 5 &10,
with the best Burgers. They had a mound of burger
sitting on waxed paper sitting in the cooler. They’d hand-form
those patties. With fried onion & butter on the bun…yah.
There used to be a diner on Center Street, Gordon’s:
Classic diner fare: egg in your malt, lumpy mashed potatoes, meatloaf,….
Sadly, it's closed.
Where HAVE all the great diners gone ? Woods Cafe
by the Veteran's Hospital in West Milwaukee..closed, too.
Hey, folks, you better use all your favorite little places before
they vanish !!!
Have you been to Kewpee (520
Wisconsin Ave.) in Racine ? Right now, they're my new burger favorite.
In fact, I almost want to agree with their motto, "Best Burgers
- Anywhere !" They've been
around since 1925. No need even to add cheese, they taste so good
!!
I’m a Vienna hotdog fan,
and I like it Chicago-style. Hell, in Chicago, V-Dog stands are
EVERYWHERE !!! I’m trying to back off on the fries, but I’m
always in search of the best V-Dog, with fresh tomatoes and a steamed
bun. Yum.
In Wisconsin, the popular link is Brats. We’ve
got Usinger’s, Klement’s and Johnsonville.
My favorite place is the Usinger stand on the corner
of Water & Wisconsin downtown. Try their Smoked Hungarian.
What we get in Milwaukee for brats is a link, but in Sheboygan,
home of the “Brat Fry”, they 've got
brat patties and a special hard roll.
Been to Charlie's Smokehouse for
smoked fish up at Gil’s Rock in Door County, Wisconsin ? Some
folks like smoked trout or smoked salmon, but for me, it's Smoked
Whitefish.
Can't go that far North ? Head to Ewig Brothers
at 121 S. Wisconsin in Port Washington - Chubs &
Whitefish. Salmon & Trout, too !
Always a treat is the Annual Port Washington American Legion
Schanen Post #82 Smelt Fry at the old Port Washington
Brewery on Lake Drive by the Lakefront.
Mark your calendar: American Legion Smelt Fry - March 28
- 29, 2008
Mexican ? Get me tacos carne
asada con ceso, por favor. My favorite taqueria is in Chicago. Actual,
there are three, all right around each other on Ashland, just South
of Division, all called La Placaditas. And get
a Jaritos Mandarin soda to go
with it.
In Milwaukee, try Conejito’s (6th & Virginia)
and their Chicken Mole, dark meat. That's my pick.
Try their mud (refritos), it’s the best.
And don’t forget a baby pitcher of Margaritas to wash it all
down. Tell the Little Rabbit I sent you.
Pizza ? I was raised in Chicago, so for deep dish,
I always want the original, Pizzeria Uno, on Ontario.
I tried it with sausage, but, nah, just gimme those 3 basic ingredients:
bread, tomatoes & cheese.
Sheet pizza (Milwaukee-style) ? I’m fancying
the De’s- Mama DeMarini’s and a block
away, Phil & Dom DeMarini’s.
You been to St. Paul ? Hit Mickey’s Diner,
one of those old-fashioned stainless “railroad car”
diners, downtown, open 24 hours.
Speaking of Diners, when I was on a Fall tour to the Northwoods,
Jonathan Hamilton of White Winter Winery in Iron River, recommended
I hit the Delta Diner, down H in the middle of
the woods. Great pancakes, hash browns,..
.
Ribs ? Man, I’m still a
neophyte. For Kansas City ribs, some say Arthur Bryant’s
are the best, but I’m still searching.
We’ve got Speed Queen on the near north side
in Milwaukee. I love their rib tips.
New to Milwaukee, Scott McGlinchey's
(of Heaven City-fame) "Q",
first in Bayview on KK, and now on Greenfield in West Allis.
I also had some verytasty baby back ribs at the Frankfort
Ave. Beer Depot (3204 Frankfort Ave.) in Louisville, KY.
Corned Beef ? I haven’t been to Manny’s
in Chicago on Roosevelt yet, but in Milwaukee, I‘ve got 2
that I favor: Jake’s on North Avenue, about
2200 West, and my favorite for a Ruben, McBob’s,
at about 5500 West on North.
Steak Houses ? I’ve been 2 great ones in
Milwaukee: Butch’s and the 5 O'Clock
Club Love ‘em both.
Bisquits & Gravy ? I head to the Sunrise
Cafe in Lafayette, Indiana.
Fish ? Catfish, Trout, Walleye & Salmon.
My favorite walleye was at Kegel’s Inn in
West Allis, WI (tho it’s off the menu now, damn!).
German ? I lament the loss of the Golden
Ox in Chicago.
Man, I loved that Lamb Shank.
In Chicago, my German favorites are still Laschet's,
Chicago Brau Haus & Resi's.
New to the list: Glunz Bavarian
Haus.
Right now, in Milwaukee, I’m recommending Kegel’s
Inn, a terrific-looking place at 59th and National (just
West of Milwaukee in West Allis). My vote: the house special: Boneless
Roast Duck.
Don't overlook Mader's, Karl Raztsch's
or the great Schnitzel varieties offered at Ritter's Inn,
too !!
Serbian ? I’d say, in Milwaukee, if you
have the time, hit 3 Brothers in Bay View, in the
old Globe Schlitz tavern.
Otherwise, stop by and see my friends Alex and
his son Michael at Old Town Gourmet Restaurant,
on Lincoln, just West of the freeway.
Italian Sausage and Tomato Salad ? I head to Tenuta's
Deli in Kenosha, WI
Cajun ? Visit Charlie Orr's Maple
Tree Inn in Blue Island on Old Western Ave.
Hopefully, I’ve got you drooling.
Got any other recommendations ? Email me !!!
